How to Draw

Do you avoid drawing characters and portraits? Are you afraid it's too difficult? With our app you can do it!

Plan the layout of your artwork so that it fits well on the paper. Imagine where you will draw the picture and how big it will be. Be sure to leave some space around the edges, possibly for a frame.

Start sketching with light, relaxed strokes using movements that come from your forearm and wrist instead of your fingers — it's different from writing. Imagine the entire drawing instead of focusing on small details. Some users find it helpful to use the flip function to help them ignore details.

Draw auxiliary lines — the eye line, the facial axis, the hairline. Focus on their proper inclination and mutual relationship. The grid and axis functions will help you with this. Try to recreate the reference photo into simple geometric shapes.

Start to focus on slightly more accurate contour lines. To check the proportions, step away from the image or look at it in the mirror. Use the projection feature for even greater accuracy.

Draw in light contours to start dividing the lighter and darker areas. Apply the first, neutral layer of shadows, always working with a very light touch.

Start filling in the darker shadows while comparing the intensity of your shading to the sample photography. The blur function is very useful during this process. Slowly add additional layers of shading. In the places that you need a darker shade, use a soft pencil. If your shading becomes too dark, rub it lightly with a kneadable eraser. Be patient and do your best not to rush through this phase.

Contrast is very important to the overall impression of your drawing. Don't be afraid to add really dark areas or details.

The last phase is when you add the small details (reflections, surface structures, fading outlines, highlighted lines and points). You can easily create glare with an eraser. Keep checking the drawing from a distance or in the mirror and continue fine-tuning it.

... and you're done!
